Below is the collection of projects and features that are currently in development.

Two Decimals in Total Column

When displaying percentages in the total column in gradebook, we’re adding the ability display two decimal places.



RCE Upgrade

We are currently upgrading to TinyMCE, version 4.1.7.

Hosted Data Service

An analytics and reporting capability for Institutions using Canvas, the Hosted Data Service will include institution and log data, allowing virtually any data query and enabling the institution to add any ODBC-compliant analytics tool to generate custom reports.

Updatable Objects

Users will be able to update content in Commons and then users who imported that content will be notified with the option to update the content from the template

Google Integration Support

The Canvas integration with Google will be updated to use the new Google Drive API v2. This enhancement will also include fixes for some of the Google integration bugs


Teachers will be able to import SCORM packages as assignments. For most SCORM packages, the grades from completed assignments will sync with the gradebook.

LTI 2.0

We’re implementing the IMS LTI 2.0 standard into Canvas. If you are interested in developing and testing an LTI 2.0 capable tool please ask to be put in touch with the Partner Solutions and Platform Development Team.

Excuse an Assignment v1

Instructors will be able to excuse an individual assignment from a student’s total grade.

Multiple Grading Periods

Institutions can display more than one semester or term in the Gradebook, including year-long courses.

Gradebook Performance

The Gradebook will load data more quickly for all courses through architectural enhancements, which will specifically benefit data management in large courses.


Student Learning Mastery GB – Hover

Users will be able to hover over an Outcome on the student mastery gradebook and see calculation options and progress over time.

Granular Differentiated Assignments

Expanding the functionality provided with section differentiation, instructors will be able to require sections, individual students, or a combination of both complete specific tasks.

Canvas iOS Quizzes

The Canvas iOS app will have quizzes as part of the native app experience, without redirecting to the mobile browser.  Initially, native quizzes will support multiple choice and essay question types.

Mobile app: Calendar

The Android and iOS Canvas apps will have a new Calendar feature that shows events and assignments for all current courses in one place.

Mobile Push Notifications

The mobile apps are being plugged into Canvas’ robust notifications infrastructure. Canvas users will receive immediate notifications of items that are pushed directly to their devices.

K12 SIS Integration

Admins will be able to create tight integrations with major K12 student information systems to provide a more seamless experience with Canvas.

Android users will now have their own app and iOS users will get an update.  This will include new UI, functionality, and workflows.

Outcomes Calculation Options

Several calculation options will be added to Canvas Outcomes to enable more choices about how mastery is shown in the Learning Mastery GradeBook.  In addition to the current Highest score option, Latest, Decaying Average, and #N Minimum Scores will be available.

Android SpeedGrader™ Link

Instructors will be able to open the SpeedGrader from an Assignment in Canvas.  If the SpeedGrader isn’t on the device, instructors will be sent to the PlayStore.

User Bios & Sent Messages for Android (4.0.2)

Android users are able to view the Sent messages folder within Conversations, and if profiles are allowed by their institution, users can add a biography to their profiles.

SpeedGrader for Android (1.0)

SpeedGrader is now available for Android devices. This app is designed in conjunction with the Canvas by Instructure app and helps instructors grade assignments, quizzes, and discussions at any time on their mobile devices.

Download the SpeedGrader app in the Play Store. Version 1.0 requires Android 4.0.3 or later.

Post Grades to SIS: PowerSchool

Canvas now supports full SIS integration for PowerSchool. This integration allows instructors using PowerSchool as their institution’s SIS to pass Gradebook information back to PowerSchool and can be enabled on both account and subaccount levels.

Updated Open Standards

As part of our ongoing support for open standards that make educational applications, content, and data “plug and play,” Canvas will be updated to the IMS Global CC 1.3 and QTI 2 standards.

Calendar: Completed Assignments

On the Calendar, students can view their submitted assignments as part of any Calendar view. When an assignment is submitted, the assignment is crossed out. For instructors, a crossed out assignment on the Calendar indicates an assignment that is past the due date and no grading is needed.

Quiz Regrade Gradebook History

Instructors can view scores for regraded quizzes in the Gradebook history. This feature allows instructors to view all grading events in the same location and see historical data for any regraded quizzes. The Gradebook history shows how many changes were made and the before and after quiz scores.

Canvas (iPhone, iPad): Favorites and Reminders

Users can modify course favorites directly in the app. Also, students can set reminders for specific assignments so they don’t forget to turn them in!

Gradebook: Movable Total Column

Instructors can move the Total column to the front of the Gradebook to quickly see an overview of student progress in the course. This option is located in the Total Column drop-down menu and is persistent according to browser. The Total Column can be moved back to the end of the Gradebook at any time.

Peer Review Indicators

When an instructor assigns a peer review to a graded discussion, the Discussions Index Page displays the peer review icon next to the name of the graded discussion. The Global Dashboard and Course Dashboard sidebars will also show this indication if the assigned student has posted a discussion. This notification icon appears in both instructor and student views

Quiz Results Restrictions

Instructors can select a new quiz option that lets students view the quiz results only once after each attempt. Instructors can use the Moderate Quiz feature to grant individual students additional views to their quiz results.
